Implementing a Learning & Development Culture

Learning and Development is an ever changing function that evolves as organisations grow and develop; implementing, maintaining or altering a learning culture is complex.

A good, clear starting point is the model described by Nancy Kuhn (American Society of Training and Development), based on input from a variety of experienced consultants:
  • Step 1: Lay a Strong Foundation
  • Step 2: Manage Expectations
  • Step 3: Make Quality a Priority
  • Step 4: Build Relationships
Through our experience, Reed Learning have found this model a good basis for our own best practice approach. As with the Learning Needs Analysis, we've defined this in terms of phases:

Phase 1: Identifying your Needs

  • Define objectives and scope of Learning and Development within the organisation
  • Perform a full Learning Needs Analysis
  • Decide on a recording system
  • Define a clear and consistent evaluation method
  • Confirm clear job descriptions and competencies

Phase 2: Communication and Buy-in

  • Clear communication to all 'customers' - roles - purpose - procedures for booking and evaluation
  • Management meetings to ensure involvement/commitment throughout the management chain - support from above!

Phase 3: Maintaining Standards

  • Selection of providers
  • Continual evaluation
  • Focus on quality and update procedures when necessary
